Living with climate change

The EU Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change is supporting at least 150 European regions in becoming climate-resilient by 2030. The infographic illustrates several examples. In Zagreb, Croatia, 1500 new trees alleviate extreme heat on city streets. In the Canary Islands, better aquifer measurements help islanders manage water resources. In the Berlin-Brandenburg region, authorities will balance increased water demand with an expected 40 % drop in surface water. In the Netherlands, floating houses are one way flood risk is being integrated into urban planning. A pilot in Croatia and Slovakia uses mesh networks and autonomous vehicles to combat wildfires.

Metro metrics

Cities are home to 75% of EU citizens and generate 70% of CO2 emissions. Transitioning to smart and carbon-neutral cities will mean deploying a range of technologies, strategies and governance tools. The infographic presents the share of urban greenhouse gas emissions by sector: Stationary energy 55%, Transport 26.3%, Waste and wastewater treatment 3.1%, Industrial processes and products use 12.5%, Agriculture, forestry and other land use 2.1%, Other 1%. Source: Self reported data from 105 Mission Cities. Data was not externally verified and not all cities presented comprehensive data on emissions.
