The European Commission has adopted a programme to support research, development, technological innovation and university education in Italy. This operational programme will have a budget of ECU 784 million. The programme is made up of the following four subprogrammes: - University education and related infrastructures: . Strengthening the links between education and local industry by promoting new scientific-technological university qualifications and study grants; . Providing infrastructures and equipment for scientific faculties in order to reduce the gap in this area between the southern and the northern-central area of the country; - Research and innovation: . Support for research centres under the control of the Ministry for Research (ENEA, CNR, INFN, INFM, Anton Dohrn); . Provision of low-interest loans and grants through the Fund for Applied Research, which is accessible to industrial undertakings and particularly SMEs, to promote industrial research; . Provision of the high-level training required for the implementation of these projects; - Diffusion, innovation and spatial development: .The transfer of technology and the promotion of scientific and technology parks, in particular to provide support for development initiatives by SMEs; . Training of staff which can play the role of intermediary between offer - university and research centres - and demand for innovation formulated by SMEs; - Staff training (evaluation, monitoring).
