Twenty universities across Europe sent a total of 45 students to take part in the second annual EU Students Telerobotics Congress which took place on 1-5 July 1995 in Noordwijkerhout, the Netherlands. The Students Telerobotics Congress was jointly financed by the Human Capital and Mobility (HCM) and TELEMAN programmes of the European Commission and was organized in cooperation with the University of Delft in The Netherlands. The event attracted entries from 20 European universities including: Vienna (Austria); Brussels and Louvain (Belgium); Copenhagen (Denmark); Helsinki (Finland); Grenoble (France); Munich and Kaiserslautern (Germany); Ioannina (Greece); Dublin (Ireland); Bologna and Parma (Italy); Delft (Netherlands); Coimbra and Lisbon (Portugal); Vigo (Spain); Bristol, Loughborough, Newcastle upon Tyne, and Portsmouth (UK). The aim of the conference was to: - Bring robotics and mechatronics students of different EU nationalities together, so that they could learn how to cope with cultural and linguistic differences through discussing and working together in European teams; - Give participating students a first opportunity to present the results of their research projects in an international technical conference; - Promote the study of mechatronics and advanced robotics; - Give some experience of participation in European Commission funded research to young students who would not otherwise have had the opportunity until later in their careers; - Increase the visibility of European Community research actions to a wider group of people. The congress was divided into two distinct parts: - The presentation, by the students, of the telerobotics research projects carried out by them as part of their final year undergraduate or masters degree courses; - The team telerobot design and build competiton in which the students were split into nine internationally-mixed teams of five students and were given the challenge of designing and building telerobotic vehicles and a remote control station to negotiate an obstacle course.
