Why might you dine on a drone?
Robotics is used in a wide range of applications, including exploration, medicine and rescue. However, robots are typically made from metal and plastic components that are difficult to recycle and can even be toxic to people and the environment. In the EU-funded ROBOFOOD(opens in new window) project, researchers opened new ways to think about sustainability, nutrition and human-technology interaction by creating robots from edible materials. The project has now been featured in the CORDIS series of explanatory videos titled ‘Make the connection with EU science’. Starting with components such as batteries, sensors and motors, the project constructed semi-edible drones and fish food pellets that swim. “ROBOFOOD paves the way for a new generation of robots that could be mass-released in nature for environmental monitoring or for delivering nutrition to animals,” says project coordinator Dario Floreano.
