The European Commission, DG XII, has published the results of the first call for proposals for the specific programme for biotechnology, under the Fourth Framework Programme for research and technological development and demonstration (1994-1998). The call was published on 17 January 1995 and closed on 24 March 1995. The number of proposals for each of the areas covered are as follows: - Cell factories: 125 received and 20 selected; - Genome analysis: 25 received and 9 selected; - Plant and animal biotechnology: 52 received and 8 selected; - Immunology, trans-disease vaccinology: 63 received and 7 selected; - Structural biology: 11 received and 4 selected (exploratory awards); - Infrastructures: 18 received and 9 selected. As with all calls published for the specific programmes, the number of projects which will actually be funded will depend on the results of the contract negotiation phase. The Commission expects to begin signing contracts for these projects in the first half of October 1995.
