A new farm-to-fork value chain for EU aquaculture
The AWARE project imagines a future where EU cities farm fish in highly efficient systems embedded within their wastewater treatment facilities. These combine aquaculture with hydroponics, using reclaimed water with zero residues to produce fish and vegetables fit for human consumption. Building the EU’s first reclaimed water aquaponics system, the project is demonstrating how urban aquaponics can shorten the fish farming value chain, incentivise the reuse of waste resources and bring citizens closer to food production.
