The Institute for Safety Technology (IST), part of the Community's Joint Research Centre, has published its annual report for 1994. The report briefly outlines the content and main results of research work performed by the Institute, in 1994, in the following areas: - Reactor safety; - Waste; - Safeguards; - Fusion; - Industrial hazards; - Reference methods for evaluation of structural reliability; - Working environment. In the reactor safety area, the research was mainly devoted to the study of severe accident phenomena and other aspects of nuclear energy. The programme on industrial hazards was focused on experimental and theoretical studies and relates to runaway reactions, accidental release of products from industrial plants and their deflagration/detonation. The second part of the report illustrates the activities performed by the institute in support of Community policies and gives information on other activities of the Institute, such as on the exploratory research programme.
