The second meeting of the European Consumer Forum was held in Madrid on 21 November 1995. The theme of this latest meeting was "Communication and Information to the Consumer". Among those present were experts in the fields of communication, advertising and the media, as well as consumer representatives and government officials. The European Consumer Forum is a recent initiative of the Commission for extending and improving consultation between the different parties involved in consumer policy with a view to making life easier for Europe's citizens. The first meeting of the Forum was held in Brussels in October 1994 on the theme "Guarantees and Consumer Access to Justice". The Forum represents a new departure from previous forms of consultation in consumer policy as it fosters dialogue that brings together all the different interests concerned by consumer issues, including not only consumers but also the productive sector, commerce, academia and other professionals. The Forum was set up in the context of the 1994 reform of the Consumers' Consultative Council (CCC) and in the spirit of the need for greater dialogue and better information in consumer policy. The Commission intends consulting all those with an interest in consumer policy by the most appropriate means. Whilst the Consumer Committee (successor to the CCC) will bring together only consumer interests, the Forum involves all those concerned by consumer policy in its future orientations and decisions in a wider sense. The aim of bringing such varied interests together is to encourage a new form of dialogue that will result in well adapted, practical measures being taken in an area where conflicting views can sometimes be common place.
