Council adopts new RTD programme in the field of non-nuclear energy
Under the 1990-1994 Framework programme a specific RTD programme in the field of non-nuclear energy (JOULE II) has been adopted by Council Decision 91/484/EEC of 9 September 1991. The programme objective is to contribute to the development of economically viable and more environmentally safe energy options, including energy-saving technologies, by means of joint activities to assist Member States in this direction. Topics include: Analysis of strategies and development of new methods; energy production from fossil sources using advanced technologies; reduction of emissions; the solar house; renewable power plants; biomass; renewable energies for rural electricity, local fuel and water; geothermal energy; new options in energy conversion; technologies for energy saving; energy efficiency in transport, including suitable fuel substitutes. The funds deemed necessary for execution of the programme, which will run to 31 December 1994, amount to ECU 155.43 million. An additional sum of ECU 1.57 million is earmarked for disseminating and exploiting results.
