A wide-ranging conference on drugs policy in Europe was held in Brussels on 7-8 December 1995. The conference was set up at the initiative of the European Commission, the Spanish Presidency and the European Parliament. The objective of the conference was to obtain an overall picture of policies for the prevention of drug abuse in the Member States of the European Union. Specific areas addressed during the conference included: - Prevention policies; - Legislation; - Control of supply; - Repression of illicit trafficking; - International cooperation. Participants included Member State officials working in the fields of drugs policy, enforcement, health and international surveillance, as well as representatives from the European Parliament, the Committee of the Regions, the Economic and Social Committee, the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drugs Addiction and the drugs unit of Europol. Observers were invited from the UN International Drug Control Programme, the Council of Europe, the World Health Organization, the World Customs Organization, Interpol and the Financial Action Task Force.
