Over 2,200 applications for research training grants were receive in response to the first call for proposals under the Training and Mobility of Researchers (TMR) programme, published in January 1995. Following an exhaustive scientific peer-review process, 513 research projects, worth ECU 41.4 million, have now been selected. The young researchers will undertake their work in a laboratory of their own choice and will be based in a country which is outside that of their current or usual residence. Over the lifetime of the TMR programme, between 2000 and 3000 research training grants will be awarded at a total cost of ECU 260 million. Most of the finance is for post-doctoral level researchers. Present planning foresees that a maximum of 20% of the funding should be for postgraduate research. In addition, the Commission pays ECU 300 per month towards the mobility costs of postgraduate level fellows and ECU 400 per month for postdoctoral level fellows. The Commission also pays an annual ECU 10,000 contribution per researcher towards the research and administrative costs of the laboratory or research centre.
