Scientific cooperation and education will be the two main issues on the agenda of the official visit of Mrs. Edith Cresson, European Commissioner responsible for research, education and training, to Israel on 9-10 January 1996. Mrs. Cresson will meet with Prime Minister Shimon Peres, as well as with the Israeli Minister for Communication, Arts, Science and Technology (Ms. Aloni) and the Minister for Industry and Commerce (Mr. Harish). She will also participate in the JISTEC international conference of education ministers in Jerusalem. This visit falls within the context of a reinforcement of links between the European Union and Israel, particularly in the area of scientific cooperation, and follows the conclusion, in October 1995, of a joint scientific cooperation agreement. This agreement provides for the participation of Israeli research and research institutes in the non-nuclear RTD programmes of the European Union. It also foresees a contribution of approximately ECU 100 million to the Fourth Framework Programme for research and technological development, from the Israeli government, for the period 1996-1997. EU researchers and research institutes will, in turn, be able to participate in Israeli R&D projects and their results.
