The European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC) has published a restricted invitation to tender for the supply of a mass spectrometer to the Institute for Transuranian Elements in Karlsruhe, Germany. The contract involves the purchase, by the Commission, of a time-of-flight mass spectrometer with ionization by electron bombardment for analysing and measuring, in real time, the effusion of fission products from irradiated samples subjected to very rapid temperature fluctuations. The essential characteristics of the equipment required are as follows: - Time-of-flight mass spectrometer with source of ionization by electron bombardment; - Very advanced vacuum system; - Oil-free pumping system; - Vacuum chamber with simple and rapid system for positioning samples (the 1-mm**3 very radioactive sample will be laser-heated, the temperature will be measured by pyrometry); - Microcomputer and acquisition software and data processing; - Possible adaptation as a glove box (in association with the Institute). The contract will be awarded to the economically and technically most advantageous tender. All correspondence relating to this invitation to tender should be addressed to: European Commission Joint Research Centre Mr. Bier Postfach 2340 D-76125 Karlsruhe Tel. +49-7247-9510; Fax +49-7247-951590
