The European Commission, DG XXII, has published a Users Guide to ECTS - the European Course Credit Transfer System. Following a six-year pilot scheme (1989-1995) ECTS has now been integrated within the Community's SOCRATES programme. The Users Guide has been published to assist educational establishments in integrating the ECTS system into their exchange programmes in order to guarantee academic recognition of studies carried out abroad. The information contained in the guide is based on the experience gained during the pilot phase which involved some 145 establishments of higher education. The Guide, which provides detailed information on the ECTS system, includes a directory of ECTS users, a glossary of ECTS terms and expressions in the eleven Community languages, examples of good practice, and useful contact details for persons looking for information and advice concerning ECTS.
