The European Commission, DG XII, has published a post-information notice concerning its invitation to tender for studies in the field of validation of alternative methods, published on 13 May 1995 (OJ No C 118 of 13.5.1995 p.13). Studies were required in the following three subject areas: - 1. Alternative methods for replacing, reducing and/or removing the use of laboratory animals in the production of vaccines, quality control and the development of safety criteria; - 2. The definition and evaluation of the pre-validation procedure within the context of the validation of alternative methods, especially the drawing up of procedures involving transferability and evaluation of the performance of protocols of tests prior to the official validation of appropriate test methods. The interaction between the different laboratories with experience in the development and evaluation of standardized procedures is to be provided; - 3. The development of an integrated approach for predicting systemic toxicity using biocynetic models on computer and biological in-vitro test methods for the "various end-points" as alternative methods to the use of laboratory animals in biomedical research. Contracts were awarded, on 6 November 1995, to: - Subject 1: RIVM (National Institute of public Health and Environment Protection) 9 Antoine van Leeuwenhoeklaan PO Box 1 NL-3720 BA Bilthoven (ECU 347,400); - Subject 2: Microbiological Associates Sterling University Innovation park Hillfoots Road Stirling FK9 4NF United Kingdom (ECU 829 560); - Subject 3: RITOX (Research Institute of Toxicology) University of Utrecht Yalelaan 2 PO Box 80176 NL-3508 TD Utrecht (ECU 420 000).
