The European Commission, DG XIII, has published the proceedings of the colloquium entitled "Preparing Europeans for the Information Society". The colloquium, which was held in Paris in March 1995, was aimed at addressing the economic, social and cultural consequences of the rapid development of information and communications technologies for the citizens of Europe. The event was organized jointly by the European Commission and UNESCO and gathered together some 60 experts in this field. Specific topics addressed include: - The social issues of information highways; - Preparing the European citizen for the Information Society; - The Information Society and Europe; - The dynamics of information networks; - The impact of new information technologies on employment; - The transformation of public services as a result of the Information Society; - Social and economic disparities; - The development of cultures in the post-industrial society; - Culture in the information age; - Legal issues on privacy, the protection of information and industrial property rights; - Ethical issues.
