ECU 62.4 million for cross-border cooperation between France and Spain
The European Commission is to provide ECU 62.4 million to support cross-border cooperation between neighbouring regions in France and Spain under the INTERREG II initiative. The programme, which will run until the end of 1999, involves the departments of Pyrénées Atlantiques, Haute-Pyrénées, Haute-Garonne, Ariège and Pyrénées Orientales in France, and the provinces of Guipuzcoa, Navarra, Huesca, Lerida and Gerona in Spain. The aim is to reduce the negative impact of the topological and administrative barrier which separates the two sides of the Pyrénées by cross-border cooperation in the economic and agricultural fields, as well as in training and the environment. To achieve these objectives, the programme is structured around the following four priorities: - Diversification of agricultural activities, forestry, livestock farming and management of the rural environment; - Reinforcing the identity of the area and developing mutual knowledge; - Encouraging cross-border cooperation by training people in new skills; - Improving the flow of information and mobility of people, and the construction of small-scale cross-border facilities on either side of the Pyrenees.
