The Economic and Social Committee of the European Union has published its Opinion on the Commission's legislative programme for transport, and its Communication on "The common transport policy action programme 1995-2000". As regards the legislative programme, the Committee welcomed the Commission's general aims, and supported the main new legislative proposals. However, the Committee noted that its previous criticisms of omissions had not been taken on by the Commission, in particular concerning structural shifts within Member States, and the lack of data and studies concerning the future demand and supply of transport. The Commission's Communication on "The common transport policy action programme 1995-2000" was also welcomed by the Committee. A lack of proposals on the social dimension of transport, in particular the need for job creation to be an aim of transport policy, was, however, noted. The Committee was also disappointed that the communication did not contain any supporting statistical material and highlighted the need for an up-to-date statistical analysis of the European transport industry.
