An amended proposal (COM(91) 330) for a Council Decision on a specific research and technological development programme in the field of nuclear fission safety (1991-1994) aims, in the context of the Third RTD Framework Programme and the EAEC treaty, to encourage basic research, training, and to strengthen the scientific and technological basis of European industry in the area of nuclear fission safety throughout the Community. The Joint Research Centre (JRC) shall contribute to activities in this field. Scientific and technical objectives of the programme cover: Radiation protection (human exposure to radiation and radioactivity, consequences of radiation exposure to man, assessment, prevention and treatment, risks and management of radiation exposure); reactor safety (accident progression analysis, behaviour and qualification of the containment system, accident management and control). Funds estimated as necessary for programme execution amount to ECU 32.67 million.
