The European Commission has decided to award a grant of ECU 70.7 million from the Community's Structural Funds to promote economic restructuration in the German region of Brandenburg. The beneficiaries of the aid awarded by the European Union will be the areas dependent on the coal and textile industries and those particularly affected in the post-war period. The funds in question will be allocated from the Community initiatives RETEX (ECU 3.3 million), RECHAR (ECU 30.3 million) and KONVER (ECU 37.1 million). They are to be used primarily for: - The diversification of the regional economic structure; - The creation of jobs; - Support to small and medium-sized enterprises; - The improvement of the environment.
