At the initiative of Mrs. Edith Cresson, Commissioner responsible for research, education and training, the Commission has formally approved the financing of 91 research training networks under the Community's specific programme for the training and mobility of researchers (TMR). The networks in question were selected from over 1,400 proposals submitted under the first call for proposals for the TMR programme. They cover a wide range of research issues including, for example: - Fighting malaria; - Improving earthquake resistance of buildings; - Developing intelligent robots; - Combining animation and virtual reality; - Increasing the mobility of paraplegics. The networks to be financed will bring together over 700 of the top research teams in Europe. Around 1,000 young post-doctoral researchers are expected to benefit by having the opportunity to work in teams outside their home country for periods of several years.
