The Council of Ministers of the European Union (EU) has adopted, on 5 March 1996, a joint action on the participation of the EU in the Korean Peninsula Energy Development Organization (KEDO). The objective of this joint action is to contribute to an overall solution to the issue of nuclear proliferation in the Korean peninsula. To this end, and in accordance with KEDO objectives, the EU will participate in this international action in the field of nuclear non-proliferation and nuclear safety by contributing to the financing and supply of: - Interim energy alternatives in the Korean peninsula; - Means existing within the EU in the scientific, industrial and technological fields. In this context, the EU will make an immediate contribution of ECU 5 million to KEDO.
