The European Commission, DG XIII, has awarded financial support to the MULTITRACK consortium for a European project for the "Tracing and monitoring of goods in an intermodal and open environment". The project will be financed under the transport sector of the Community's specific RTD programme in the area of telematic applications of common interest (1994-1998). The objective of MULTITRACK is to develop and market a European service which will allow shippers, consignees, transport companies as well as national and local authorities, to monitor, track and locate a shipment through the whole logistic chain, whatever the means of transport used (road, rail and sea). The project's first phase, which will last for three years from 1 January 1996, will set up two operational pilot projects within the scope of multimodal monitoring. The first will cover the transport of spent nuclear fuel between France and Germany, and the second the transport of cars between England and Spain. The MULTITRACK consortium members are: Alcatel Amtech (France), BIS Strategic Decisions (UK), EUTELSAT, IAI (Spain), MARBEN Group (Spain) and Marben SA (France), NTL (France), Port of Santander (Spain), RONDA (Spain), SOGEFI (France), and TÜV Pfalz (Germany).
