The European Commission has published a call for the submission of applications within the framework of the ALFA programme for EU/Latin American cooperation in the field of academic training. The ALFA programme (Amérique latine - formation académique), which will run for a period of five years from 1 November 1994, aims to encourage cooperation between Latin America and Europe in the field of higher education and promote cooperation programmes through networks of higher education institutions. Support is given to projects involving common academic activities, particularly the exchange of students. The programme's objectives are to improve the scientific, academic and technological potential of Latin America, and contribute to the regional integration of Latin American countries. The programme's activities are grouped in two sub-programmes: - A: Cooperation for institutional management, aimed at: . Academic and administrative management; . Academic recognition of qualifications; . Improvement, adaptation, and if necessary harmonization, of curricula; . Cooperation between higher education institutions and companies; . Innovation and systemization of the educational task; . Institutional assessment; - B: Cooperation for scientific and technological training, aimed at supporting curricula for: . Advanced training (PhDs, Master's degrees and professional qualifications); . Complementary training of students in the final two years of a higher education degree; . Devising common research projects. Applications for projects, under both A and B, are invited from higher education institutions in Member States and Latin American countries. Priority will be given to academic projects related to economic and social sciences in general. A guide to the ALFA programme, and forms to submit projects, may be obtained from: BAT/CEEETA 36 rue Joseph II (4th Floor) B-1000 Brussels Tel. +32-2-2190453; Fax +32-2-2196384
