The sixth annual edition of the "Panorama of EU Industry" has been published by the European Commission, DG III. This 1,500 page publication contains analysis, statistics and forecasts for the different sectors of EU industry. In addition, in a special feature for the 1996 edition, there is a global analysis of the EU's trade competitiveness and employment trends by sector. The Panorama finds that the EU's recent trade performance has been significantly influenced by non-cost factors, including the sectoral structure of European industry and RTD spending. In particular, it points out that European RTD suffers from an over-emphasis on fundamental research at the expense of commercial innovation. The EU's share of new patents is strong in aerospace, other transport sectors, pharmaceuticals and engineering. However, in the electronics sector, in which RTD activity is most intense at world level, the EU's share of new patents has been steadily falling. The Panorama of European Industry is available in English, French and German. It will also be available on CD-ROM, in all three languages, from May 1996.
