A total of 109 proposals have been selected for funding under the specific RTD programme in the field of nuclear fission safety (NFS) under the Framework Programme of the European Atomic Energy Community (1994-1998). The NFS programme is being implemented through a single call for proposals published on 17 January 1995. The call had two deadlines for the submission of proposals for shared-cost projects: 20 March 1995 and 28 February 1996. The call for concerted actions and support to thematic networks is continuously open until 1 November 1997. A total of 253 proposals (243 shared-cost projects and 10 concerted actions) were received in response to the first deadline indicated. Following evaluation by independent experts from all disciplines covered by the different research activities of the NFS programme, 109 proposals were recommended for selection. The total EU financial contribution will be approximately ECU 86 million, corresponding to a total project value of ECU 201 million. The number of selected proposals for each research area of the NFS programme are: - A: Exploring innovative approaches: 12; - B: Reactor safety: 19 (including two concerted actions); - C: Radioactive waste and decommissioning: 34; - D: Radiological impact on man and environment: 38 (including five concerted actions) - E: Mastering events of the past: 6. A total of 152 research proposals were received by the second deadline, under the five programme areas. The evaluation and selection procedure for these proposals is still under way. Following the conclusion of contract negotiations on this second selection of projects, the publication of an EUR report presenting a synopsis of NFS research projects is foreseen.
