COST Committee prepares ground for entry of Romania
A Romanian delegation was invited to participate at the latest meeting of the COST (European Cooperation in Scientific and Technical Research) Committee of senior officials, held in Brussels on 11-12 April 1996. Within the perspective of Romania's forthcoming admittance as a full member of COST, the Romanian delegation gave a presentation of R&D activities in this country. Romania's formal admittance as the 26th member country of COST will not, however, take place until the next COST Ministerial Conference, which is due to take place in Prague in May 1997. The Committee also approved the participation of the following individual institutions from non-member countries in specific COST Actions: - Technical University of Timisoara, Romania; - University of Georgia, USA; - Bulgarian Academy of Sciences; - State University of St. Petersburg, Russia; - Russian Academy of Sciences. The Committee approved the extension of two existing COST Actions, and adopted the following six new COST Actions: - COST 257: Impact of new services on the architecture and performance and wide-band networks; - COST 258: Development of natural sound in synthetic voice systems; - COST 714: Measurement and use of directional spectra of ocean waves; - COST 334: Effects on single and twin tyres; - COST 336: Use of the "FWD déflectomètre" in the evaluation of roadways; - COST 337: Loose surfaces for roadways. The next COST meeting will take place in Lecce, Italy, on 24-25 June 1996.
