EC-Canada cooperation in higher education and training
More than 100 universities, training colleges and other learning institutions will be involved by the end of 1996 in a new phase of transatlantic cooperation between the European Union and Canada. The recently launched programme for cooperation between European and Canadian higher education and training institutions made a strong start in January 1996, following a first call for proposals which brought in over 1,000 requests for application forms. The budget for the first call, ECU 600,000 on the European side and CDN $1 million on the Canadian side, allowed six joint consortia projects to be selected from 56 proposals, involving a total of 45 partner institutions and associated organizations. A second call for proposals was issued on 16 April 1996, with twice the amount of funding. This should allow a dozen projects to be launched by the end of 1996. Since each joint consortium must include at least six partners, the second tranche of projects should raise the number of organizations actively involved in EU-Canada cooperation to around 120 higher education and training institutions. The new call, which closes on 4 October 1996, will enable, in particular, institutions in regions with little or no previous transatlantic cooperation experience to identify and establish links with potential partners. No call for proposals will be made in 1997.
