The second in a series of annual reports on education policy in the European Union has recently been published by DG XXII of the European Commission, under the SOCRATES programme. The report, entitled "Key data on education in the European Union" brings together analysis and statistics on the various EU education systems. The publication, prepared by EURYDICE on behalf of DG XXII, aims to promote greater mutual understanding of the diversity of the national education systems in the European Union. It is based on a combination of statistical data and qualitative information on the organization of the education systems. This second edition contains more data than the first and includes a comprehensive dossier on the teaching profession. New indicators have also been introduced, including those on the movement in youth unemployment, levels of decision taking in relation to the allocation of budgets and their use at school level, establishment of the relationship between the rates of pre-school attendance by three-year-olds and the percentage of mothers in paid work, etc.
