The COST programme for European cooperation in the field of scientific and technical research, coordinated by DG XII of the European Commission, has published a list of its new actions on the World Wide Web. The COST programme is based upon a flexible set of arrangements enabling different national organizations, institutes, universities and industry (especially SMEs) to join forces and work together on pre-competitive research projects in a broad range of scientific and technical areas. COST currently coordinates part of the national research activities of 25 states (the 15 EU Member States, Croatia, Hungary, Iceland, Norway, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Switzerland, the Czech Republic and Turkey). The new COST actions are in the fields of telecommunications, transport, meteorology, agriculture and biotechnology, food technology, social sciences, civil urban engineering, chemistry, and forestry. COST has also published an overview of its ongoing actions and those in advanced preparation on the World Wide Web. There are currently COST activities in the following 18 research areas: - Informatics; - Telecommunication; - Transport; - Oceanography; - Materials; - Environment; - Meteorology; - Agriculture and biotechnology; - Food technology; - Social sciences; - Medical research; - Urban civil engineering; - Chemistry; - Forestry; - Fluid dynamics; - Physics; - Nanosciences; - Miscellaneous.
