The European Parliament's Scientific and Technological Options Assessment (STOA) Panel has adopted a project workplan for research into use of the Internet by women. The project, proposed by the Parliament's Committee on Women's Rights, is to gather information about the fears, expectations, challenges and opportunities experienced by women in different age categories, and with different social backgrounds, who are facing the rapid development in information technology and electronic communication through the Internet. The Committee suggested that the project be based around a series of workshops in different countries. These would use as a starting point scenarios developed and tested in Austria. The Committee also suggested that the workshops be modelled on the European Awareness Scenario Workshops, introduced by the European Commission's INNOVATION programme for the dissemination and exploitation of research results. The project steering group held its first meeting on 15 May 1996, at which detailed plans for the project were discussed.
