Mr. Padraig Flynn, Commissioner responsible for employment, social affairs and public health matters, has announced the approval of a list of 11 public information projects on the health dangers of smoking, funded through the Community Fund for Research and Information on Tobacco. The fund is raised by means of a levy on the premium paid for the production of tobacco leaf in the Community. The projects will receive finance amounting to ECU 5.5 million. The projects selected are mainly aimed at young people, and will include studies of information campaigns and attitudes, as well as education campaigns themselves. The Commission will shortly publish a second call for proposals for projects concerning research and information on tobacco.
