1996 Europe Against Cancer Week to focus on skin cancer The European Commission's 1996 "Europe Against Cancer Week" will focus on the prevention of skin cancer. The European Commission's 1996 "Europe Against Cancer Week" will focus on the prevention of skin cancer. The campaign will explain the risk of excessive exposure to the sun, and inform people of the importance of protecting children in particular. The Week is organized within the framework of the Community's "Europe Against Cancer" programme, coordinated by DG V of the Commission. Mr. Padraig Flynn, Commissioner responsible for health matters, said that although the sun was a source of pleasure and essential for health, it was among the risk factors in skin cancer, which affects 10,000 European citizens each year. The campaign, which will not be spread over one single week, will be implemented in three steps, as follows: - 3-9 June: "Sun awareness week" focusing on the risks to children of overexposure to the sun; - July and August: multilingual information campaign in southern European tourist destinations; - 7-13 October: information week targeting health professionals, intended to raise awareness of the risks associated with exposure to ultra-violet radiation, as well as early detection of skin cancer.
