The European Association of Manufacturers of Business Machines and the Information Technology Industry (EUROBIT) presented industry recommendations for "Developing the Global Information Society" to the Information Society and Development Conference (ISAD'96) held in South Africa on 13 May 1996. The industry recommendations, developed by EUROBIT in partnership with IT industry representatives in the USA, Canada and Japan, cover the following points: - Interoperability; - Privacy and trust in an Information Society; - Intellectual property rights; - Universal access; - Access to RTD and new applications; - Market access. The industry has elaborated detailed policy recommendations on three key areas. These are: - Encryption - internationally accepted and comprehensive security policy; - Telecommunications - competitive basic telecommunications; - Tariffs - elimination of all tariffs on information technology and telecommunications products by an Information Technology Agreement.
