Negotiations between the European Community and the former Yugoslav republic of Macedonia led to the initialling of a Cooperation Agreement on 20 June 1996 in Brussels. This is the first agreement between the European Community and the former Yugoslav republic. Under it, the EU will grant preferential trading arrangements and provide for cooperation in a large number of sectors. There is also provision for a political dialogue on the basis of a joint declaration. Under the Financial Protocol, the European Investment Bank will contribute to projects of common interest, notably in the field of transport infrastructure, valued at ECU 150 million.
