Commission to investigate R&D aid to SGS-Thomson
The European Commission has decided to investigate the Italian government's proposal to provide research and development aid of ECU 18 million to SGS-Thomson, an international semiconductor manufacturer. The proposed funding will contribute to the design and development of dedicated integrated circuits and silicon processing methods, in a research process which began in 1993. The Commission is investigating the proposed aid grant in relation to its necessity, its incentive effect and the pre-competitive nature of the work.
