The European Commission has decided to finance a regional statistical cooperation programme for the southern and eastern Mediterranean countries. The programme, MEDSTAT, will have a budget of ECU 20 million. The programme will assist the Mediterranean countries to adopt the statistical norms and methodologies used in the European Union. It will raise the level of comparability of data between the Mediterranean countries themselves, and between the Mediterranean countries and the EU, with resulting benefits for regional policy and the private sector. The MEDSTAT programme will also make data exchanges more efficient and rapid. MEDSTAT will be organized on the same model as the other statistical cooperation programmes which have been implemented, including those for Central and East European countries established under the PHARE and TACIS programmes.
