European Space Agency signs cooperation agreement with Portugal
An agreement on space cooperation for peaceful purposes was signed on 24 July 1996 between the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Portuguese government. The agreement aims to establish closer cooperation between Portugal and ESA in areas of mutual interest, such as space sciences, earth observation, telecommunications and microgravity. In particular, the Portuguese authorities have expressed an interest in participating in ESA activities carried out in the framework of the Agency's ARTES 9 programme. The agreement also intends to exchange information on the activities of the two parties in the fields of research and development and space applications, as well as fostering an exchange of experts and setting up joint pilot projects. Similar cooperation agreements have already been concluded with Greece, Hungary, Poland and Romania.
