The European Commission, DG V, has launched a call for proposals for actions in 1997 under the "Europe against cancer" Community action plan, which has been adopted for the period 1996-2000. In 1997, priority will be given to the following actions and their respective objectives: - A) Data collection and epidemiological research, including continued support for: . The network of European cancer registers coordinated by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC); . The EPIC survey coordinated by the IARC; . Carcinogens: practical implementation of the results, with a view to cancer prevention; - B) Prevention/health education, including: . Sociological studies on behaviour and lifestyles, notably with regard to smoking, in order to provide guidance for the groups working in this field; . Prevention of smoking through actions aimed at young persons, evaluations of legislative measures, actions for a "Smoke-free environment" and encouragement for projects connected with the annual European week against cancer; - C) Early detection and screening, particularly through the continuation of the networks of pilot projects on screening for breast cancer and cervical cancer; - D) Training and quality control, in particular through: . Collaboration with general practitioners; . Mobility of professionals between high-level centres of excellence; . Promotion of actions to provide training for trainers; . Projects for nurses and dentists. Projects will be considered only if they are in line with the Commission's list of actions above and only if they provide real added value for the European Community. The following are deemed to yield such added value: - Activities involving participation by at least three Member States; - Activities conducted jointly in several Member States; - Activities capable of being applied in other Member States if adapted to their conditions and cultures (pilot projects).
