The European Commission has published the results of the first call for proposals for projects under the EC-US Cooperation Agreement in higher education and vocational training, concluded in November 1995. One hundred and forty joint proposals were received by the deadline of 26 January 1996. Both the EC and US evaluated the full range of proposals using independent experts. After this stage, 27 proposals were on both shortlists. These were then evaluated in detail in joint discussions. The total available budget of ECU 1.1 million and USD 1.49 million for each side meant that only eight joint projects have been supported following this call. The projects are as follows: - US-EU export development programme; - Study and evaluation of cultural landscapes; - Global dimensions in health care; - WorkWorld 2000 - an international strategy for school to work transitions; - Student mobility in automotive engineering; - Developing a new generation of trans-Atlantic industrial partners; - The trans-Atlantic studies programme - comparative politics; - ATLAS - Atlantic mobility for academic studies in engineering and environment. A second call for proposals is likely to be made after October 1996, following the start of the new financial year in the USA.
