The European Commission, DG XII, has published the fifth call for proposals under the specific RTD programme in the field of Environment and Climate.

Proposals are invited for research, technological development and demonstration activities in the following areas of the Environment and Climate work programme:

- Theme 1: Research into the natural environment, environmental quality and global change (all areas);
- Theme 2: Environmental technologies (all areas);
- Theme 3: Space techniques applied to environmental monitoring and research:
. Area 3.1. Methodological research and pilot projects:
. 3.1.1. Methodological research (concerted actions only);
. 3.1.2. Pilot projects;
. Area 3.2. Research and development work for potential future operational activities;
- Theme 4: Human dimensions of environmental change (all areas).

Potential participants will be able to check, with the Commission services concerned, that their proposal is in accordance with the objectives of the programme and with the eligibility criteria before formally submitting their proposal. This pre-checking service will close on 15 December 1996.

In order to facilitate participation of organizations from the Central and Eastern European countries, the countries of the former Soviet Union, and from developing countries, Community financial support can be made available.

The following open calls have been published for proposals to be submitted at any time throughout the duration of the specific programme in respect of the following activities:

- Technology stimulation actions to encourage and facilitate participation of SMEs (CRAFT):
Proposals for cooperative research projects are subject to a continuously open call, launched on 17 January 1995 and can now be submitted up to 1 April 1998.

- Research training grants:
Individual research training grants are awarded to provide opportunities for the advanced training, exchange, and mobility of researchers at doctoral and post-doctoral level in science and technology relating to the environment and climate. There will be two selection rounds yearly up to 20 August 1998. Applications from qualified researchers should reach the Commission by 20 March or 20 August each year.
