ECU 52 million for Corsica/Italy INTERREG cooperation
The European Commission has awarded ECU 52 million under the INTERREG Community Initiative for cross-border cooperation, part of the Structural Funds, for cooperation projects between Corsica and Sardinia, and between Corsica and Tuscany. The INTERREG funding, which is additional to national and private funding, will be spent on projects to improve infrastructure, including ports and roads, improve facilities for tourism, and develop cross-border exchanges in the university, cultural, economic and scientific sectors. Funding will also go to projects to improve environmental protection and protect important sites. This will include, for example, the creation of the International Marine Park of the "Bouches du Bonifacio" and the "Archipel de Maddalena". A feasibility study for the construction of an underwater gas pipeline to supply the Isle of Elba and Corsica will also be funded under the programme.
