Five Dutch institutes operating in the field of scientific information services, and formerly attached to the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie van Wetenschappen - KNAW), are to be merged into a new organization known as the Netherlands Institute for Scientific Information Services (Nederlands Instituut voor Wetenschappelijke Informatiediensten - NIWI). The institutes taking part in the merger are: - The KNAW Library; - The Social Science Information and Documentation centre (Sociaal-Wetenschappelijk Informatie- en Documentiecentrum - SWIDOC); - The Netherlands Agency for Current Research Information (Nederlands Bureau voor Onderzoek Informatie - NBOI); - The Netherlands Historical Data Archive (Nederlands Historisch Data Archief - NHDA); - Bureau for Bibliography of Dutch Language and Literature (Bureau voor de Bibliografie van de Neerlandistiek - BBN). The new institute, scheduled to open in September 1997, will provide scientific information services across a broad spectrum of scientific areas. Special attention will be given to the needs of the user. The products and activities of the NIWI will include the provision of electronic services, documents, information on current research, data archives and bibliographical files.
