The European Design Prize (EDP) is one of the activities of the "Promotion of innovation management techniques" section of the Community's specific programme for the dissemination and exploitation of the results of RTD activities (INNOVATION). The aim of the EDP is to stimulate awareness and use of design as an instrument of innovation and quality, and to strengthen the competitiveness of companies. The competition is open to SMEs, of up to 250 employees, from throughout the European Economic Area. The 1997 competition is currently under way, with 64 finalists, from 16 countries, selected on the basis of national competitions. The overall winners of this year's EDP will be announced in Paris, France, on 31 January 1997.
