The European Union's Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) is a voluntary environmental management scheme, based on harmonized principles throughout the EU. Its overall objective is to promote continuous environmental improvements by committing industrial sites to improve their environmental performance and provide relevant information to the public. Sites that wish to be registered in the scheme must have their environmental statements validated by an independent, appropriately accredited, environmental verifier. An updated list of EMAS verifiers is published in the Official Journal of the European Communities (OJ No C 223 of 31 July 1996, p. 1). A list of sites registered in EMAS is also provided.
