The European Commission, on a proposal from Mr. Marcelino Oreja, Commissioner responsible for culture, has selected 124 projects for support under the KALEIDOSCOPE programme for 1996. The KALEIDOSCOPE programme, which was adopted by the Council and Parliament in April 1996, supports actions at European level in the cultural sector. The programme is based around two actions: - Action 1: support for events and cultural projects carried out in partnership or through networks; - Action 2: Large-scale European cooperation projects. Of the 124 projects selected, 119 are in Action 1, and these will receive Community funding of ECU 4.9 million. In Action 2, the five projects selected will receive ECU 601,000. The projects selected represent 17% of the total number of projects submitted (716). In addition, financial support for the European Union Youth Orchestra and the European Union Baroque Orchestra amounting to ECU 750,000 was also provided under Action 2. The programme also supported the European City of Culture 1996 (Copenhagen) and the European Cultural Month (St Petersburg), which have been supported every year by the Commission. A call for projects for KALEIDOSCOPE funding for 1997 has recently been launched (OJ No S 196 of 9.10.1996 p. 28), with a closing date of 15 January 1997.
