EU-Canada consultations on the environment
The European Commission and the government of Canada conducted their annual high level discussions on the environment in Brussels on 25 October 1996. The meeting covered a wide range of issues, with particular attention given to pressing global environmental issues including trade and environment, climate change, forests, sustainable development and the UN General Assembly's special session on environment and development. Other topics discussed were domestic environmental policies, biodiversity, depletion of the ozone layer, waste, chemicals, protection of the marine environment, eco-labelling, leg-hold traps, biotechnology and nuclear issues. Both sides agreed to increase cooperation in the run-up to the forthcoming international negotiations in the environmental field. Cooperation will also be improved in three specific areas: - Eco-labelling; - Conventions on biodiversity and climate change; - Persistent organic pollutants, and the action plan on the protection of the marine environment from land-based sources.
