In December 1995, the European Commission, DG XVII, published a call for proposals for the demonstration of Integrated Quality Targeted Projects relating to the rational use of energy (RUE) (OJ No S 240/C 337 of 15.12.1995). The call, launched under the Community's specific RTD programme in the field of non-nuclear energies (THERMIE), addressed the following priority areas: - 1. RUE in buildings and integration of renewable energies in buildings; - 2. RUE in transport and urban infrastructure. A total of 55 proposals were received in response to the call, of which nine have now been selected for funding: five in the area of RUE in buildings and four relating to RUE in transport. The total Community contribution to these projects amounts to over ECU 20 million. An Integrated Quality Targeted Project on energy technologies is a major European collaborative project that includes different partners from at least three Member States, or a combination of Member States and Associated States. It is designed to have a significant impact on the energy and environment situation in the EU at a demonstrative level. This is to be achieved through the demonstration of specific high-quality energy technologies.
