The European Commission has approved funding of ECU 29.3 million for urban regeneration schemes in three cities in the United Kingdom under the URBAN Community Initiative of the Structural Funds. The URBAN funding is designed to enhance the employment prospects and skills of local people and attract investment. In all, the programmes will help to create or preserve over 1,800 jobs and contribute to training and counselling for around 7,800 people. These URBAN programmes complete the series of URBAN programmes in British cities, and bring the total EC contribution to the UK, under the URBAN Community Initiative, to ECU 79.3 million. The new programmes are in the following areas: - Park Royal, London: ECU 7.7 million; - Hackney and Tower Hamlets, London: ECU 8 million; - Sparkbrook, Birmingham: ECU 8 million; - Townhill, Swansea: ECU 5.6 million.
