The European Commission, DG XIII, has recently published a study on "The markets for electronic information services in the European Economic Area - supply, demand and information infrastructure". The study was carried out under the auspices of the Information Market Observatory (IMO), supported by the IMPACT programme for the development of an internal information services market. The study assessed the electronic information services market in all 15 EU Member States, plus Norway and Iceland, on the basis of a common methodology. The survey covered the supply side, the demand from various important user groups in each Member State, and the most important factors in the national information infrastructures. The study provides accurate information about European markets for electronic information services, including user research which was not previously available. It contains a number of examples of national experiences which could have a pan-European application, including: a Swedish initiative to improve computer literacy in schools; a Finnish initiative to maintain an intensively used library system; and Danish experience in conceptualizing a national information policy.
